Rules Lawyer commands

Every question you can ask Rules Lawyer in Foundry VTT chat, with an example of each. Start a message with /w rules or /w lawyer, then ask in plain words. Small typos are fine: the answer says what it read them as.

Look up the rules

Spells, conditions, items, monsters and rules from the SRD 5.2.1 and the rules modules you choose. Every answer cites the book and page.

  • the basics: how do I play, how does combat work, how do I make a character

Rulings on the scene

“I” is the token you have selected, or your character’s token; “my target” is the token you targeted. Every weapon, target or spell slot is ruled on and listed: Yes, No, or Not sure.

Is a spell on the sheet, and should anything on the sheet give it? The answer always reaches the GM as well as you.

  • can <name> cast <spell>

/w rules can bill cast fireball
  • can <name> take <feat or feature>

  • how can <name or I> get <spell> [as an always prepared spell]

  • check <name>

For the GM: allowances and rulings

Let a character keep something the sheet check flags, and rule on what the rules leave open. Everything is kept in that world only.

  • allow <name> <spell, feat, feature, item or ability scores> because <why>

/w rules allow bill witch bolt because old Magical Secrets
  • allowed [name]

    /w rules allowed

  • rulings (what you ruled from “Not sure” cards)

    /w rules rulings
  • forget <ruling>

    /w rules forget R-7001
  • rule <question>: allow, deny or GM’s call [this case] [because <why>] (or accept / don’t use it, for an older book’s answer)

/w rules rule can I cast alarm at my target: deny because it takes too long in a fight
